This year, searches for accommodations by groups of three or more travelers have increased by 36 percent during the festival weekend compared to last year. In addition, young travelers are immersing themselves in the music scene, with Chicago searches by Gen Z guests surging by 60 percent during this year’s festival. Hosting on Airbnb is an important source of supplemental income for Chicagoans, helping low- and middle-income residents stay in their homes and pay bills. According to an Airbnb survey of hosts in Chicago:
- 63% said the income earned through hosting has helped them stay in their home
- 50% said they use the income from hosting to cover the rising costs of living
- 19% said hosting helped them avoid foreclosure or eviction
During Lollapalooza 2024, local hosts and guests generated over $42.5 million USD for the City of Chicago, and supported nearly 400 local jobs. Hosts collectively earned over $6 million, highlighting the major impact on the local economy – reaching well beyond conventional tourist areas.
